Agenda 2008 The American Presidency

When the President asked Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge to stand up the new Department of Homeland Security (DHS), CSP offered the new Secretary off-the-record dialogues with think tanks, universities, and business leaders for innovative counsel. Participants in these sessions examined the relationship of DHS to the other agencies in the Executive Branch, addressed the shortcomings of country’s first National Homeland Security Strategy, including the need for close coordination among governors and federal authorities in the event of a terrorist attack on the homeland, and gathering perspectives on current and upcoming Homeland Security Concerns, among other topics.

CSP continues to sponsor roundtables featuring noted speakers on topics concerning homeland security. In September 2006, Dr. Scott Atran, a renowned expert on the Middle East and an informal interlocutor between the governments of Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, and the United States, among others, spoke on issues related to the current state of political, diplomatic, and military affairs in the Middle East, Islamic terrorism, and U.S. interests in the region.
