MARY O’CONNOR
Director of Outreach
As Director of Outreach for the Center for the Study of the Presidency, Mary O'Connor is responsible for programs and events that provide opportunities for national exposure, funding resources, and board development.
She is a recognized community leader in the non-profit, corporate and political arenas. She has served as Georgia Finance Chair for the Elizabeth Dole for President Campaign and the Dole for Senate 2002 Leadership team, Andrew Young for Governor of Georgia Campaign, and President of the Young Democrats at Trinity College, Washington D.C., where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science.
Mary served a two-year term as National President of the ARCS (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists) Foundation, Inc, a non-profit foundation of 1,500 women located in 14 cities throughout the United States. Since 1958, this organization has awarded over $61.7 million in scholarships to America's brightest U.S. citizen-scholars in the fields of science, engineering and medicine. She currently serves on the ARCS Foundation National Advisory Board.
While living in Atlanta, Mary founded Mary B. O'Connor and Associates, a community relations consulting firm that provided clients with a structured contributions strategy and targeted leadership roles in communities in the Southeast. Clients included Digital Equipment Corporation, Coopers & Lybrand, BellSouth and TRW Information Systems.
As Executive Vice President of SciTrek, the Science and Technology Museum of Atlanta, Mary coordinated all marketing, development and community relations projects pertaining to opening a new $6 million science museum in Atlanta.
Other current community activities include Board of Directors, Campagna Center, Alexandria, VA; Cannon Sloop Healthcare Foundation, Linville, NC; and the Junior League of Washington, D.C. While living in Atlanta, she served as Official Olympic Attache for the Republic of Ireland during the 1996 Olympics, as well as a board member of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, St. Joseph's Hospital of Atlanta Foundation, Vice President of the Junior League of Atlanta and the Atlanta Chapter, National Society of Fundraising Executives. She is an Alumnus and former Executive Committee member of Leadership Atlanta.
Mary's recognition and awards include: the American Institute for Public Service Jefferson Award for Outstanding Public Service, the WXIA-TV Atlanta Community Service Award, Honorary Grand Marshall of the Hibernian Society of Atlanta (first woman selected), Woman of the Year, Atlanta Women's Commerce Club, and induction to the YWCA of Greater Atlanta Academy of Women Achievers.
