In its first report, New Horizons for a Healthy America: Recommendations to the New Administration (April 2009), a component of CSPC’s Strengthening America’s Future Initiative, the Commission on U.S. Federal Leadership in Health and Medicine offers a slate of innovative recommendations for a comprehensive, Federal agency national strategy to advance health in the United States and globally.
Co-chaired by Rear Admiral Susan Blumenthal, MD, MPA, Director of CSPC’s Health and Medicine Program, and Denis Cortese, MD, President and CEO of Mayo Clinic, the Commission’s membership is comprised of health leaders from government and the private sector including Nobel laureates, former Cabinet secretaries, NIH Directors, and leading members of the health policy community, academia, research, and media.
New Horizons for a Healthy America proposes strategic steps for ensuring health in all policies, enhancing national investments in scientific research, emphasizing the power of prevention and health promotion, implementing health information technology, paying for value in medical services, and promoting global health. The recommendations provide a roadmap for charting a path from the peril of our current health crisis to the promise of making America the healthiest nation in the world.
