Comprehensive Reforms for the Presidency
The Constitution was designed to balance executive, legislative, and judicial powers, while a range of codified rules and political norms came to exist as further checks and balances—particularly regarding presidential powers and decorum. Many of these have been tested over the past four years, raising questions about presidential accountability and the rule of law. This challenge is complicated as partisanship often prevails over institutional interests.
Joining us to discuss potential reforms is Jack Goldsmith, former head of the Office of Legal Counsel at the U.S. Department of Justice during the George W. Bush Administration and co-author of “After Trump: Reconstructing the Presidency.” In this book, he outlines more than 50 proposals on how to address the “dangerous excesses of authority and dangerous weaknesses in accountability” witnessed over the past four year.
